URE Centro Gutenberg – A Q&A with Spain’s innovative fertility clinic

Eloise Edington  |   28 Aug 2020

We’ve been there – you’ve been told you’re not going to be able to conceive naturally, and fertility treatment or IVF are your only option.

With all the uncertainty and apprehension, how do you even begin to pick a fertility clinic, what should you look for in fertility specialists, and why might you pick a fertility clinic in Spain?

If you’re like us, you most probably don’t want to feel as though you’re a number. You want to feel special and you yearn for empathy and the personal touch to guide you through an unfamiliar process.

Introducing URE Centro Gutenberg, a leading Spanish clinic

So, with this in mind, we’re really pleased to be introducing our TRB readers to one of the best family-run fertility clinics in Spain, who focus on exactly that: patient care, your wellbeing and optimum IVF success.

Introducing the Incredible Team at URE Centro Gutenberg, Malaga, Spain.

Welcome! Can you introduce us to URE Centro Gutenberg?

(URE) was established in Malaga in 1987. By 1989— with a team of more than twenty fertility specialists—we were successfully able to assist in the very first pregnancy with IVF in the Malaga province, resulting in a baby girl.

Since that first baby girl (Lorena), the Gutenberg Centre Reproduction Unit has become the leading speciality fertility clinic for having performed the highest number of assisted reproduction treatments in the province of Malaga.

According to data from the Spanish Fertility Society, this places us as one of Spain’s best fertility clinics when it comes to innovation and expertise.

Can you tell us a bit more about the clinic’s background?

At URE we’re proud to have been a part of the greatest milestone of 20th century medicine, just as the birth of Louise Brown was the world’s first test‑tube baby in 1978.

That’s why we brought Louise Brown to Malaga – she shared with us her experience as the world’s first IVF baby as well as very personal details regarding her origins.

Louise’s parents spent ten years waiting for a pregnancy that never came to fruition. This even caused her mother to fall into a deep depression. Her parents finally decided to travel more than 600 kilometres from home to make their dream come true.

They visited the hospital of physiologist Robert Edwards, gynaecologist Patricks Steptoe and Jean Purdy, the woman who would become the world’s first embryologist.

These three individuals were able to find success after hundreds of failed attempts at IVF techniques.

What sets you apart from other fertility clinics?

With us, you know you’ll have the basis of more than 30 years of experience.

We perform assisted reproductive technologies, from the easiest such as Artificial Insemination (IUI), to the most sophisticated, such as In Vitro Fertilization, Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis and Egg Donation.

We are constantly investing in cutting-edge technologies to assure that we are always up to date with the latest techniques to help you fulfil your goal of parenthood.

Over the years, we have built trust with a great many women and couples struggling to overcome their infertility problems.

We have aided them in achieving their family, thanks to the diagnostic-therapeutic methods and the assisted reproductive technologies carried out in our clinic.

Why do people choose Spain for fertility treatment?

There are many reasons why foreign patients are attracted to Málaga in Spain. It’s the home of prestigious fertility clinics, high-quality treatment and doctor expertise, as well as competitive costs.

Spanish law is more permissive than other countries, for example with anonymous sperm and egg donation. In the UK, there has been a fall in the number of voluntary donors and waiting lists are longer.

Almost all techniques are permitted here in Spain, except for commercial surrogacy and gender selection. About 40,000 babies are born annually in our country through these techniques and between 10,000 and 15,000 couples travel to our country every year in search of assisted reproduction treatments. They come from a wide range of countries; however, the majority are from the UK.

Then of course, add to those factors the sea, weather, sun, food, culture and variety of accommodation in Malaga – it really makes us a great destination!

How do you help patients kick-start treatment abroad?

We understand how important it is to make the decision to travel abroad for assisted reproduction treatment. That is why we believe in the importance of an international department offering patient services 365 days a year.

Our fertility clinic is exclusively dedicated to international patients and we speak several languages.

The International Team offer assistance from the very first moment you contact them until the end of your fertility treatment. They want to be in constant contact with you and to help with anything you may need: sorting out your visa, finding accommodation, providing prescriptions for medication… these are just some of the things they can do for you.

Overall, our goal is to make sure that the language and travelling to Spain doesn’t become an obstacle for you. We want to make sure that your stay is as comfortable and as smooth as possible.
