DNA testing, what is it? How does it work and what can it do for fertility? Annette Presley, founder of the Get Pregnant Plan, eplains the process, to help our Fertility Help Hub readers to have all the resources needed to make an informed decision about fertility treatment options.

Why is fertility declining?

Worldwide, fertility declined by 50% from 1960 to 2015. That is a significant decline!

So, why is fertility declining? The answer is simple: our biology is no longer a match for our environment.

Think about all the things that have changed in the past 50 years. The food we eat is different, grown with all kinds of chemicals in nutrient-poor soils. We eat more processed and convenience foods than our grandparents ate.

We have a more hectic lifestyle that comes with more stress, worry and uncertainty. We have more to do, more to see, more to buy, and more really bad news to view from all over the world.

Technology is quite different now than it was and it keeps evolving, so we are exposed to new electromagnetic frequencies that our bodies just aren’t used to.

Why is fertility declining for some and not for others?

This is where our genes come into play. We all have the genes we were born with. Our genes don’t change unless we live in outer space. Some women have genes that make it easy for them to detox from all the toxins they are exposed to. Or they might have genes that help them get more nutrients from foods. Some women have genes that make it difficult to produce antioxidants, which will make it harder for them to get pregnant.

The good news is that, while we are stuck with the genes we have, they are not our destiny. We actually have the ability to turn on genes that express for health (or baby making) and turn off genes that express for disease (or baby blocking). How cool is that!

We just need to know what genes we have in order to know which ones we need to turn on and which ones we need to turn off.

Our DNA, then, is like a blueprint that can guide us to the therapies, treatments and diet that will provide the best chance for a successful pregnancy. We can use DNA testing to take the guesswork out of the equation and focus on things that have a much better probability of success.

With DNA testing, we can see what nutrients we might have an increased need for, and what biological pathways have a kink in the system that we need to unclog or work around so we can get pregnant faster.

DNA testing with a clinician

DNA testing is best done in the context of a full health history and combined with other lab work to get a complete picture of what is going on in the body and what therapies have the best chance of working to correct any problems. You want to work with a trained clinician and fertility specialist who can interpret the results based on your unique health history. Testing your DNA and then taking a fertility supplement based on the results is just another cookie-cutter approach to health that will only work for a few people.

Working with a trained professional and fertility specialist who can interpret the results from your genetic testing will cost a whole lot less than IVF, will leave you stronger both physically and emotionally and give you the best chance of getting pregnant, staying pregnant, and nourishing a healthy baby to term.

Even if you still need IVF, genetic testing will increase your chance of success and help you cope better with the fertility medications and hormone manipulation, so it’s a win either way.

If you would like to learn more about how genetic testing can help you conceive either naturally or through IVF, you can book a complimentary consultation with the Get Pregnant Plan, here.
