Acupuncture and fertility – what to know

From its origins in traditional Chinese medicine to its integration into contemporary medical care, acupuncture has gained attention for its potential benefits in aiding fertility.

Watch as Mike Berkley from The Berkley Centre of Reproductive Wellness sheds a light on acupuncture and fertility. Together, we’ll dive into the intriguing question of whether acupuncture can help restore a missing period, its safety during IVF treatment, and its role in supporting individuals both before and after IVF transfers.

Can acupuncture help with lack of periods?

“If a woman has a low ovarian reserve and very few follicles secreting very little estrogen, there’s a possibility that her lining won’t thicken and she won’t get a period.

You can help improve follicular quality and egg quality with acupuncture in some cases, and that will serve to generate more to facilitate more excretion of estrogen from the follicles, which will then thicken the lining and the period will resume.”

Is acupuncture safe? Does it help during IVF stims?

“Acupuncture is completely safe. Absolutely nothing to worry about as long as you’re being treated by a licensed and board-certified professional.

Does acupuncture help during IVF stimulation? The answer is no, it does not. It’s better to do acupuncture three or four months in advance of a retrieval.”

How does acupuncture support pre & post-transfer?

“Doing acupuncture pre-embryo transfer kind of suffuses the endometrium with blood thereby enriching the uterine lining, getting it more prepared for implantation.

When acupuncture is done post-embryo transfer, it reduces the spasming of the uterus, so you are minimizing the chances of an ectopic pregnancy and thereby increasing the chances of endometrial implantation.”

In the world of fertility, acupuncture has emerged as a holistic approach that addresses not only the physical aspects of reproductive health but also the intricate interplay of emotions and hormones.

Whether you’re considering acupuncture to complement your fertility journey or seeking to understand its post-IVF transfer benefits, acupuncture can be a turnkey for many when TTC.
