Fertility treatment in Denmark – myths vs facts (based on what patients really think)

Emma Harpham, Editor   |   30 Jun 2025

If you’re based in the UK and you’ve ever looked into fertility treatment abroad, there’s a fair chance you’ve come across Denmark somewhere on your searches.

Often talked about for its progressive approach to donor conception and high medical standards, Denmark is recommended as a patient-friendly destination. But how much of what you’ve read is actually true?

We recently asked you a series of questions over on our TRB Instagram designed to help sort the myths from the facts, and the results both surprised us and ticked some serious boxes in Denmark’s favour.

So, using your real patient opinions, paired with insights from the expert team at Maigaard Fertility Clinic, one of Denmark’s longest-standing clinics with 25+ years of experience and locations in Aarhus and Odense, we’re setting the record straight.

We’ve worked with the brilliant Maigaard team back in 2023, and fast-forward to 2025, they’ve launched a newly updated website with specific guidance for international patients, making it even easier to plan your journey.

Now, read on for the facts you need to know about the fertility treatment Denmark has to offer.

Fertility treatment Denmark myths – busted

1. Myth: Denmark isn’t a popular destination for fertility treatment

Let’s start with the basics. Is Denmark really on the fertility travel map?

Surprisingly, over half of our community polled (that’s 57%) didn’t think so – but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Denmark has long been one of Europe’s most progressive countries when it comes to donor laws, patient access, and science-backed fertility care.

“Maigaard has always been proud to welcome patients from all over Europe and the world. A combination of the Danish laws, the quality of treatment and the availability of donors makes Denmark a great option for international patients”, says Bjørn Bay, Fertility Specialist and co-owner of Maigaard Fertility Clinic.

2. Fact: Single women and same-sex couples can access fertility treatment in Denmark

This one’s easy – and one of the key reasons Denmark stands out. Unlike some countries where access to fertility care can depend on your relationship status or sexuality, Danish law is clear.

It covers:

Bjørn tells us: “Maigaard and Denmark in general are well known for inclusivity and progressiveness. Being able to offer ROPA or reciprocal IVF is a great step forward and means we can offer treatment to an even wider group of patients, including those in the LGBTQ+ community.”

3. Myth: Danish sperm donors are all anonymous

Another myth we saw come up a lot (25% of you thought so): that Danish sperm donors are all anonymous. Not true.

In Denmark, patients are given the choice between anonymous and ID-release donors. That means you can decide what’s right for you and your future family, depending on your own views and needs. This flexibility is one of the reasons so many patients come here – especially if you’re looking for an open approach to donor conception.

“Maigaard has a really well-established donation programme for both egg and sperm donors, ensuring patients have a wide choice of high-quality donors if needed. We’re fortunate in Denmark to have great donor availability, and we’re proud to be able to pass that on to our patients from around the world”, says Bjørn.

4. Fact: Wait times for treatment in Denmark are shorter than in the UK

Unlike the NHS or even some UK private clinics, Denmark is known for its swift and efficient care. Our poll confirmed it – every single one of you said you thought wait times are shorter.

Bjørn explains: “We make a promise that patients can always meet with a doctor as soon as possible, usually within one week. In fertility, time really does matter, so the entire Maigaard team ensure we provide the correct support and treatment as quickly as possible. What might surprise patients coming from elsewhere is that in Denmark, Doctors are much more accessible and work hand-in-hand with patients to achieve the best outcome.”

So, if you’re trying to avoid long delays between your referral and starting treatment, choosing a fertility clinic in Denmark could help you get going faster.

fertility treatment Denmark facts

5. Myth: You need to speak Danish to access fertility treatment in Denmark

Almost half of our community (that’s 43% of you) thought you’d need to speak Danish to receive treatment – but actually, most fertility clinics in Denmark work entirely in English for international patients.

At Maigaard, for example, you’ll have access to English-speaking coordinators, doctors and nurses who are experienced in supporting international journeys.

6. Fact: Age limits for treatment can vary slightly, but are really accommodating

Here’s where the picture is more nuanced. 25% of you thought treatment was available up until age 40, and the rest of you (that’s 75%) were split between ages 45 and 50 as the upper limits.

Whilst age limits do vary slightly, private Danish clinics can treat patients up to the age of 46 for IVF, depending on your medical profile.

At Maigaard Fertility Clinic, highly personalised care and assessments are standard, so you’ll be given honest advice on your chances and options based on your unique health and fertility profile, rather than a blanket age cut-off.

7. Fact: Danish fertility clinics are known for strict standards, cutting-edge tech, and science-backed care

This one’s a vote of confidence. 80% of you recognised that Danish clinics offer the full package – strict protocols, innovative technology and an evidence-based approach to care.

Bjørn explains that at Maigaard Fertility clinic in particular: “…we have over 25 years’ experience and is known for combining a highly scientific, data-driven approach with warm, individualised support. We’re also at the forefront of the latest techniques in embryo freezing and donor screening.”

8. Fact: Fertility treatment in Denmark is often more cost-effective than in the UK

Finally, let’s talk costs. The majority of you (71%) correctly guessed that fertility treatment in Denmark can be more affordable than in the UK, even after factoring in travel.

Private IVF in the UK often starts from £5,000–£7,000 per cycle, not including medication or donor costs.

“There’s definitely some misconceptions about the cost of treatment in Denmark. At Maigaard we work really hard to ensure treatment is as affordable as possible, and often less expensive than other countries in Europe. So, while some things are indeed expensive in Denmark, thankfully fertility treatment is not one of them”, says Bjørn.
