Whatever the background to your family-building journey, the decision to use a sperm donor won’t have been a small one.

Starting out tends to throw up a lot of questions – some more immediate and donor specific, but there are some very important ones that might not come up right away, including can you use the same sperm donor twice, or even more?

Many (including TRB Founder Eloise and her family) do choose to keep the same donor for siblings, but there are a few tips, rules and practicalities to keep in mind.

To help make sense of how it all works, we caught up with the expert team at California Cryobank, one of the largest and most established sperm banks in the US.

With the industry’s largest and most diverse donor portfolio, they bring nearly fifty years of experience to your journey. Not only that, TRB readers can get special access to extended donor profile information with a FREE Level 3 Subscription ($250 value) with code RIBBON25.

Now, let’s get into it.

Can you use the same sperm donor twice?

The short answer is yes, you can.

Using the same sperm donor twice or more for siblings is common, and most sperm banks, including California Cryobank, will work with you to hopefully make that possible.

However, once a donor has reached their family limit or their available supply is sold out, no more vials will be released.

That means if you want to use the same donor again in the future, it’s best to plan ahead and secure the vials you’ll need.

If you haven’t decided how many children you would like to have, it’s important to have that conversation early on – either with your partner (if you have one) or your fertility doctor.

Understanding sperm donor family limits

A “family limit” is the maximum number of families who can use sperm from the same donor.

These limits are designed to make sure that only a set number of families can access a donor’s sperm, which helps to avoid large numbers of families using the same donor in one area.

It’s important to note that family limits don’t affect whether you can use the same donor again for siblings within your own family — they only apply across different families.

What is the sperm donor limit in the U.S.?

While there is no single, nationwide legal limit in the U.S., each sperm bank sets its own policy.

In Colorado and at California Cryobank, the limit is set to 25 families per donor. This number is based on guidelines from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) and is designed to balance donor availability with safety for everyone.

It’s in the name, but note that family limits apply to families, not individual births. That means one family could have more than one child with the same donor, and it would still count as a single “family” toward the limit.

Why donor supply runs out

Even if a donor hasn’t reached their family limit, their vials can still sell out.

This can happen quickly with popular donors, whether that’s due to their physical traits, medical history, or personal profiles.

Plus, sperm banks collect and release only a certain number of vials per donor. Essentially, once they’re gone, you’ll most likely have to find and choose another donor – unless the donor decides to donate again.

How to reserve donor sperm, at a glance

If you know you may want to use the same donor again in the future, purchasing and storing multiple vials is the most reliable way to ensure they’re available when you need them.

Here’s how that works at California Cryobank:

How many vials do I need?

As a guide, California Cryobank recommends purchasing 3 to 4 vials of donor sperm per successful pregnancy via IUI, based on national average success rates.

Your doctor will probably ask for 1 or 2 vials for each round of treatment you have, whether that’s Intrauterine insemination (IUI) or In vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment.

How do I secure my vials?

Here’s how to get started, with California Cryobank:

  1. Open your account and purchase vials from your chosen donor — Buy the vials you might need for your current treatment and future plans.
  2. Schedule to ship, or store securely — California Cryobank stores your extra vials under your name until they’re scheduled for shipment, so no one else can purchase them.
  3. Ship when ready — When you decide to use them, the vials are shipped within the U.S. to your fertility clinic or your home.
  4. California Cryobank also offers their free Family Today & Family Tomorrow® programs specifically to allow you to store donor sperm for current treatment and for future use.
    • Family Today provides 1 year of free storage with the purchase of 4 or more vials.
    • Family Tomorrow provides 3 years of free storage with the purchase of 8 or more vials.

In short, you’ll get increased peace of mind and help to reach your family-building goals, whilst avoiding the difficult reality of finding out your donor is no longer available if/when you’re ready for another child.

What if I really like a donor and want family exclusivity?

California Cryobank’s Donor Reserve Program grants you access to a select collection of donors whose vials are only made available to either your family alone, or to a limited number of families (no more than 10).

Both offer you greater family exclusivity – for today and tomorrow.

What if I end up with extra vials in storage?

Once pregnant, you can extend your storage term for future siblings (just in case), or take advantage of California Cryobank’s Vial Buyback Offer.*

This is where your vials are purchased back by California Cryobank for 50% of their original purchase price – provided you meet all of the participation requirements, including that the vials haven’t yet shipped.

Top tips for planning ahead

If you’re considering reserving donor sperm for a future sibling, here are some points to think about:

  • Talk to your clinic earlyYour doctor or clinic can advise how many vials to reserve based on your fertility treatment plan and goals.
  • Act quickly for popular donors — If your donor’s profile is in high demand, availability can change fast.
  • Budget for storage fees — Sperm storage can often come with an annual cost, so factor this into your planning.

The bottom line? By planning ahead with a trusted bank, you can protect your options for the future, if you want to use the same sperm donor twice.

California Cryobank’s range of donor availability and detailed donor profiles combined with careful tracking of family limits and secure free and paid storage programs give you the best possible chance of using the same donor more than once.

And a little extra reminder – TRB readers can get started with special access to extended donor profile information with a FREE Level 3 Subscription ($250 value) with code RIBBON25 at cryobank.com, right now.
