Films and Documentaries on (In)Fertility – Our Top 8 Picks
Eloise Edington | 10 May 2023
Seeing ourselves and our experiences reflected in the media we watch is really important for helping us make sense of them – and that includes our fertility journeys.
We love a good doc or film that gets into the nitty gritty of real-life TTC inspiring stories, and there are tons out there showing real life IVF, IUI, baby loss and the emotional strength it takes to get through it all.
We hope these fertility and IVF films are affirming and remind you that you are not alone in your trying-to-conceive journey (we’ve included links on where you can watch them).
Documentaries

One More Shot
If you search ‘films about IVF’, this is one that always comes up. It follows a film-maker couple who try all different fertility methods in order to achieve their family – from IVF, IUI (intrauterine insemination) to third-party reproduction. They interview other families and record all the important moments – it’s real, heartwarming and it fulfils its goal to have ‘an honest dialogue about infertility’.

Eggs Over Easy
This film is one that wants to break taboos within Black women talking about their fertility issues and what they face. The creative team behind the film believes that Black women will have more power over their own bodies when they understand reproduction and talk more openly. The film covers all sorts of topics including: egg donation, surrogacy, IVF and adoption. We recommend this one, as it shows a side of fertility treatment that is often glossed over or ignored in mainstream media and amplifies Black women’s voices in the fertility discussion.

The Easy Bit
This compassionate film looks at six individual men and their perspectives on going through fertility treatment. Men are often seen to be less affected by fertility problems, and the goal of this film is to right this wrong assumption and help men get through the process of dealing with male infertility. Done in a ‘talking heads’ style, it’s really personal and relatable. Funny and moving in equal measure, it’s a great watch for both men and women.

Modern Baby
This ABC documentary follows the lives of four couples over a year of trying to conceive. One couple is experiencing infertility after cancer, another is looking at embryo adoption, a third needs to set up a fundraising page after a stillbirth and the last is a lesbian couple’s search for a family. An empathetic documentary with a really diverse mix of couples, it allows you to get to know the four families and their personal stories.

Romeo Romeo
From 2012, this documentary follows an American lesbian couple as they struggle through infertility problems – looking at how it affects their finances, relationship and outlook on life. We don’t want to spoil anything, but things do go well, and we recommend this watch for another in-depth and relatable story of trying to conceive – whether you’re an LGBTQ+ family or not.

Don’t Talk about the Baby
This last documentary in this part of the list, is a little different to the others in that it specifically looks at baby loss and the grief, stigma and awareness around it. It’s quite emotional, so won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s very affirming to see other people talk about their experiences and it gives others permission to grieve. With personal interviews and conversations with experts, it’s definitely a well made documentary that can give comfort about the hardest part of the fertility journey.

Films

Private Life
If you’re having a night in and having a scroll through Netflix, this would be the film to stop on. Following a couple in their 40s in New York trying to conceive, it’s an independent film full of comedy and honest observation about the world of fertility treatment. The story was inspired by the writer and director’s own fertility problems so it’s no surprise that it is often hailed for being such a realistic portrayal.
Available to stream on Netflix

Maybe Baby
To end the list we have a light hearted, British RomCom from 2000 that stars Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson and even an appearance from Rowan Atkinson. Following a perfect couple who have everything they want apart from a baby, it looks at their journey and the options they consider. Not the most serious on this list, it’s a good, uplifting maybe nostalgic film that includes a couple dealing with IVF and considering adoption. Like Private Life, it’s said to be inspired by the director Ben Elton’s own experiences with infertility.
