Today’s post is a goodie. When I was preparing for IVF, I didn’t know enough about extra holistic therapies to support conception and IVF success. However, I did benefit from Karla from Nature Heals personally treating me with a womb massage and fertility acupuncture. So we’re delighted to turn to Karla to hear more about womb massage benefits, and how to get started.
What is a Fertility/Womb Massage?
Fertility, Womb or Maya massage is a relaxing, nourishing, non-invasive and very effective technique that is performed on your abdomen and lower back.
We’ll start by working gently over the abdominal area of the reproductive and digestive systems to encourage hormonal balance, looking to improve whole-body balance to help with numerous conditions. This type of massage will help you to connect with your inner-woman, connecting your heart and the womb, that can be used at any stage of your life journey.
Womb massage is a gentle but deeply moving therapy, used to enhance natural conception success, for IVF and ART preparation and in support of any gynaecological concerns you might have, such as PMS, painful periods, irregular periods, blood clots, amenorrhea or the absence of period, lower back pain, endometriosis, adhesions, adenomyosis, painful intercourse, ovarian cyst, vaginitis and IBS.
Receiving this nurturing womb massage offers numerous benefits for the body; here are some below:
- Encourages displaced uterus to its optimal position
- Regulates menstrual cycle
- Alleviates painful menstruation and ovulation
- Increases circulation and promotes blood flow to the uterus
- Helps with stagnation and with detoxification of the body
- Helps with scar tissue
- Promotes relaxation and reduces stress

Why Fertility Massage is Much More than a Regular Massage?
This is a treatment every woman should experience at least once in their life. Most massage therapies avoid this area, but with this massage the focus is on the abdomen. The abdominal area is a storehouse of many of our emotions like fear, anger, resentment and when we experience these emotions, our muscle fibres around that area or organs tighten and block the free flow of blood.
Fertility massage is focused on the internal organs in the abdominal cavity and helps to improve circulation in the pelvis and sacral area and adjusts the pelvis. It also works on the digestive system and gut health, promoting harmony of immune system health.
Regular fertility massage is very beneficial as a complementary therapy to the IVF process. While you are trying to conceive and preparing your body for conception or undergoing IVF, during your first session I will teach you a very simple self-care routine to speed up chances of conceiving.

Womb massage benefits
Hormonal Balance – By gently working on the abdomen, the massage releases oxytocin, balances hormone levels and regulates the period.
Prepares the body for conception – By assisting the increase of blood flow to the uterus, it helps to oxygenate the blood and increase egg production to aid fertility and reproductive health.
Regulates the menstrual cycle – By moving any stagnation in the womb, it helps to ease PMS symptoms that can lead to pain-free periods and a more regular cycle. In TCM we spend a lot of time moving the stagnant energy or blood, for example, to aid blood flow to the uterus. The massage helps clear congested, stagnant blood, such as in the case of endometriosis.
Reduces pain – Maya massage (womb massage) helps to reduce painful periods as it releases endorphins by gentle and non-invasive aligning of the muscles and ligaments, to an optimal healthy position.
Reduce scar tissue – Fertility massage helps to break up scar tissue and adhesions from Caesarean sections, pelvic issues and abdominal surgery. The removal of adhesions is really effective in providing a non-intrusive therapy for blocked fallopian tubes as well as with endometriosis.
Move stagnation in the abdomen – This wonderful relaxing massage helps to move any sluggishness in the abdomen and improves blood circulation and flow, not just to the womb area, but all the surrounding organs in the abdominal cavity: the liver, spleen, intestine, bowels, uterus and ovaries. Chinese medicine says that all the organs need to function in synergy to support each other and, when one organ is out of sync, it impacts other organs in the body by either draining or over-bearing another organ.
Reduce stress level – If you are under great impact of stress, this throws your hormones out of balance. Massage creates relaxation and releases oxytocin and helps you to relax. Massage will also relieve stress in your digestive tract and stomach area and encourage harmony within. Regular self-care helps you to connect with your body, maintaining the relaxation level for longer.

Why does the Womb become Misaligned?
Dr Rosita Arvigo, who learned this ancient knowledge from Don Elijo Panti, a Mayan medicine man, and brought the teaching to the modern world, said that 75% of women will have a misplaced or tipped uterus at some point in their life.
This can happen because of a car accident; a fall that had an impact on the lower back; a fall on the sacrum; weakening of ligaments due to over-stretching during pregnancy or a difficult labour with delivery stretching over a long period of time; high impact exercise; wearing high heels; carrying young children over long periods of time on the hip; unaligned pelvic bones; error during surgery which can cut through the uterine ligaments; chronic constipation; chronic muscular spasms in the abdomen and lower back; time and gravity.
All this can stretch and damage uterine ligaments, creating changes to the position of the uterus.
When is the Best Time to do Maya Massage?
The best thing is to come and see me three months before you start trying to conceive or at the very beginning of your IVF treatment (just after your menstrual bleeding), and to commit to at least one treatment a month. During your first session, you will be taught a self-care routine to do at home.
Having womb massage post-partum is very powerful and effective treatment that should be done on every mother after giving birth, to help to align the womb and ligaments back to the correct position.
When Not to do a Womb Massage on Yourself
During your menstrual cycle
If you have IUD
In the first trimester of pregnancy
Within six weeks post vaginal birth or three months post Caesarean birth
