Fertility

Third time around, this fertility support has become a non-negotiable for me – here’s why

Jessie Day, in partnership with Ritual , Senior Editor   |   18 Feb 2025

It’s February, which means – at age 38 and with a lot of fertility experience (read ‘baggage’) behind me – I’m at the point where we – my partner and I – are turning our focus to trying for a baby again.

We’d set January as our ‘let’s go for it’ month – and I like to prep at least three months out – so, October is where the magic happens, as far as my ovarian health is concerned.

I know so much more than I did a few years back. I’m feeling clear on my big priorities for fertility health. But what I was really looking for this time, alongside the foundations of focused nutrition, whole body health and good sleep hygiene – was targeted fertility support, underpinning all the good work I’m doing day-to-day.

A 3-in-1 formula focusing on outcomes

Turning 39 next year, my top concern is egg health, and ovarian function. I have regular periods, and recently covered top tips for natural ovulation support as part of my future fertility planning. So I was super-excited when Ritual got in touch, asking me to try out their brand new 3-in-1 supplement, Fertility Support

This formula got my attention early on, thanks to its combination of CoQ10, NAC and myo-inositol – three micronutrients which round out the top of my list, for ovary health support while I’m prepping for pregnancy.

Ritual create high-quality, science-backed dietary supplements with a focus on clean, traceable formulas. But, make it super-easy with a 3-1 lemonade-style drink mix. I just add chilled water and lots of ice for a refreshing, centering ritual, twice a day. And of course – you know me! – this is sugar-free. Think a light lemon water, which helps you hit your fertility goals*.

Try it and create your own delicious combo (frozen citrus slices and fresh mint are my current favorites!) and keep reading for the why on those egg, follicular and ovary health micronutrients of focus

CoQ10, NAC and myo-inositol are top of my agenda for late 30s fertility support, whatever I have going on. Getting them 3 in 1 in a delicious drinkable is a happy bonus. Let’s dive in.

Ritual Fertility Support Review

FOCUS 1: CoQ10

CoQ10 (coenzyme Q10) plays a crucial role in energy production, particularly within the mitochondria of ovarian cells.

Fertility Support delivers 200mg of bioavailable CoQ10 – clinically shown to help improve follicular health by enhancing the energy available to developing eggs*. This can be especially important for women like me – in our late 30s and into our 40s – as CoQ10 levels decline with age.

Plus, I’m all about my antioxidant status at age 38. CoQ10’s powerful antioxidant properties help reduce oxidative stress*, which can negatively impact ovarian cells and lead to fertility issues.

The specific CoQ10 form Ritual have gone for – Ubiquisome® CoQ10 – is 2.7 times more bioavailable than conventional CoQ10, ensuring it’s quickly and efficiently absorbed. CoQ10’s ability to support cellular energy production and improve follicular health makes it a foundational micronutrient support for ovarian health*.

Support with diet

Alongside my twice daily lemonade style Fertility Support, I boost the CoQ10 side of things with oily fish (sardines and mackerel in particular), great quality meat like beef and chicken, and whole grains. For extra points, pair these with healthy fats such as avocados or olive oil, which can help increase absorption of CoQ10 from the food we’re eating.

FOCUS 2: NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine)

NAC is a powerful antioxidant known for replenishing glutathione, a critical molecule in protecting ovarian cells from oxidative damage. Studies show that 1.2g of NAC can significantly improve ovarian function*, particularly for women with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).

NAC works by reducing oxidative stress, which can damage egg cells during their development – I really like the reassurance that NAC provides, in helping to maintain my overall ovarian health*.

For women with PCOS, NAC can also help to improve insulin sensitivity, addressing one of the main causes of fertility issues in PCOS sufferers*. Ritual use the vegan form of NAC – and ensure it is ethically sourced – unlike some other forms derived from bird feathers (I was semi-shocked to learn!)

By reducing oxidative stress and supporting insulin regulation, NAC is an important ally in improving both ovarian health and fertility.

Support with diet

A supplement provides that targeted dose of NAC I’m looking for pre-conception, but certain foods can boost glutathione production. Sulfur-rich foods such as garlic, onions, and cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts) support natural glutathione levels.

And of course, vitamin C-rich foods like oranges and bell peppers also help increase the body’s antioxidant capacity. Aim to eat the rainbow on a daily basis – think tomatoes, a wedge of lemon, collard greens, frozen peach and berries for days, swapping and rotating out your favorites, depending on the season.

FOCUS 3: Myo-inositol

This superstar is increasingly well-known as an essential compound for maintaining normal ovulation cycles and supporting healthy hormone levels. Clinical studies indicate that 4g of myo-inositol daily helps regulate ovulation, especially in women with PCOS, by improving insulin sensitivity and hormonal balance*.

Myo-inositol plays a key role in promoting better insulin regulation, which is crucial for healthy ovarian function. It also helps maintain an optimal environment for egg maturation. Many women with irregular cycles or PCOS experience an improvement in ovulation regularity and overall egg quality after supplementing with myo-inositol.

Note, I don’t have PCOS, but the potential benefits for healthy ovulation and hormonal balance are pretty compelling, so it’s a priority.

Support with diet

In addition to supplements, myo-inositol can be found in various foods. Fruits, (citrus, peaches and pears are great to start with) whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds are excellent sources of inositol. Including these foods in your daily diet can help maintain your natural inositol levels and support overall ovarian health.

My preconception nutrition ritual – 3 in 1 (and delicious)

That’s it! Three micronutrients I’m focusing on this time around pre-conception, the why for each and a few targeted diet supports to pull everything together. Plus, the super-delicious drink I’m sipping twice daily, for baseline support.
