While folic acid is commonly used in supplements, it’s synthetic and less bioavailable than natural folate, which works better when paired with B12 and B6.

2. Vitamin D

Omega-3 fatty acids – especially DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) – are essential for sperm health. DHA is found in high concentrations in the sperm head and tail, which makes it vital for motility and overall sperm function. But omega-3s do more than just boost sperm performance; they help reduce inflammation and improve blood flow, both of which are crucial for fertility.
“Investing in a high-quality fish oil supplement – or an algae-based option for those on a plant-based diet – can make a world of difference in your sperm health,” Isabelle advises.
5. Selenium
Selenium is another trace mineral that plays a role in sperm development and motility. Deficiency in selenium can lead to reduced sperm quality, but supplementation has been shown to improve sperm parameters, especially when paired with vitamin E.
“Think of selenium and vitamin E as a power duo for sperm health,” says Isabelle. Together, they help combat oxidative stress and protect the sperm cells from damage.
6. Coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinol)
CoQ10, or ubiquinol in its active form (here’s our go-to supplement), is essential for mitochondrial function and energy production in sperm cells. Studies have shown that supplementing with CoQ10 improves sperm count, motility, and morphology while also reducing oxidative stress.
“CoQ10 works at the cellular level, ensuring your sperm have the energy to swim and survive, which is critical for successful conception,” Isabelle adds.
7. N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)
As a potent antioxidant, NAC is incredibly important for reducing oxidative stress, which is a major contributor to poor sperm DNA quality. Supplementing with NAC has been linked to improved sperm motility and a reduction in DNA fragmentation, leading to better chances of conception.
“NAC is a game-changer,” says Isabelle. “It protects the sperm’s genetic material, reducing fragmentation and improving sperm health from the inside out.”
