Myo-inositol and d-chiro-inositol are in the spotlight right now, for their clear benefits for fertility and promising management of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

But, with swathes of info online – and an increasingly crowded fertility supplement market to navigate – how do we know we’re getting it right when it comes to choosing preconception support?

The cutting-edge myo and d-chiro-inositol supplement, now available in the UK

We know first-hand at TRB HQ that a good dietary baseline supported by top-notch food supplementation is one of the very few things that is actually within your control, when you’re trying to conceive (TTC).

And for this kind of pinpoint-precise support, Ovosicare® Fertility has caught our eye.

It’s a food supplement formulated with innovative and natural origin ingredients which help support female fertility, especially in those with PCOS or who are over the age of 35.

After years of helping Spanish women on their TTC journeys, Ovosicare® Fertility has recently become available to buy in the UK. And, unlike most of the brands already on the market here, it combines 12 innovative ingredients with a unique, patented ratio of myo-inositol and d-chiro-inositol that is scientifically proven to positively impact fertility.

This same formula that’s seen really positive results in Spain (minus the melatonin, to ensure compliance with UK regulations) is now exclusively available via LivBio, Ovosicare®’s official UK retailer.

Today, we’re partnering up with the Ovosicare® team to lift the lid on some of the latest science on why myo and d-chiro-inositol for fertility, and how they work together – and in tandem with other key nutrients – for superior preconception supplementation.

Let’s go!

What are the different types of inositol?

There are nine different types of inositol, but the most well-known in the fertility space are myo-inositol and d-chiro-inositol.

Inositols are a type of sugar made in the body. They’re also found naturally in some foods, as well as in supplement form.

They play a crucial role in a couple of our key biological processes, including the regulation of insulin and hormone balance.

What’s the difference between myo-inositol and d-chiro-inositol?

You’ll often see these two mentioned together, but myo-inositol and d-chiro-inositol both play slightly different roles in the process of supporting insulin sensitivity,

Myo-inositol is the most common form of inositol. It is known for its role in helping the body use glucose more effectively. It is also a key treatment option for PCOS and is naturally found in beans, grains and nuts.

D-chiro-inositol, on the other hand, is involved in glycogen synthesis and storage in the body. Carob, a flowering evergreen tree native to the Southern Mediterranean and North Africa, has a long history of medicinal use, particularly for women seeking to conceive. Its fruit, rich in caroinositol, is a natural source of d-chiro-inositol.

Myo-inositol and d-chiro inositol fertility benefits

When it comes to female fertility, studies have shown that both myo-inositol and d-chiro-inositol have significant benefits.

  • Improving egg quality – Myo and d-chiro-inositol have been shown to improve egg quality, one of the most crucial factors in female fertility. One to note if you’re over 35, and egg quality is a concern.
  • Regulating ovarian function – Myo and d-chiro-inositol support healthy ovarian function by regulating the menstrual cycle and restoring ovulation. This is especially beneficial if you have PCOS, and often experience irregular periods and anovulation.
  • Improving insulin sensitivity – Myo and d-chiro-inositol work to balance hormones by reducing insulin resistance. This reduction in insulin resistance helps to lower androgen levels, which in turn can reduce symptoms like excessive hair growth and acne, while also supporting your overall fertility profile.
  • Encouraging better metabolic control – Myo and d-chiro-inositol also contribute to better metabolic control, which can indirectly support fertility by helping with weight management and lowering overall BMI

Interestingly these two forms of inositol have even been found to work synergistically together to enhance fertility – here’s how.

The breakthrough inositol ratio for maximum efficacy

One of the most recent innovations lies in Ovosicare®’s clinically proven ratio of myo-inositol to d-chiro-inositol.

Most fertility supplements on the UK market use a 40:1 ratio, whereas Ovosicare® uses a 3.6:1 ratio, which has been shown to promote significantly enhanced efficacy in several clinical trials.

Myo-inositol alone doesn’t pack the kind of fertility punch most of us need. However, research has linked higher-dose d-chiro-inositol and myo-inositol with improved egg quality when used in the 3.6:1 combination.

Previous research has focused on the 40:1 ratio in the bloodstream, though it’s important to note that different tissues have their own specific ratios. However, recent research highlights that higher amounts of d-chiro-inositol can actually help restore the optimal myo-inositol to d-chiro-inositol ratio at the body’s systemic level, which in turn supports improved ovarian function.

Beyond egg quality and ovarian function, the Ovosicare® patented 3.6:1 formulation has been shown in studies to be more effective in improving pregnancy and live birth rates, especially in women with PCOS.

Other studies have also shown that this particular balance may improve success rates for patients having IVF.

That’s Ovosicare® Fertility’s key inositols, in a nutshell. But else should we know about what’s on the label?

What to take with inositol

Ovosicare® Fertility incorporates vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that work together with inositol.

These ingredients are carefully selected and sourced, ensuring that you get the best possible support for your fertility journey.

Here are the key players, straight off the label.

1. Antioxidants

Pomanox® is a high-quality form of pomegranate extract, found in the skin of pomegranates. The key active ingredients – flavonoids, polyphenols, punicalagin and vitamin C – are known for their potent antioxidant properties.

Antioxidants are crucial in protecting cells, including egg cells, from oxidative stress – a key factor in ageing, hormone imbalance and reduced fertility.

To get enough of these compounds from juice alone, you’d have to drink litres of it. Pomanox®, however, delivers these potent ingredients in a much more concentrated form.

By including Pomanox® as a natural antioxidant powerhouse alongside their signature inositols, Ovosicare® gets another big tick for egg health and hormonal support.

2. Folic acid

Folic acid is pretty well-known for its role in reducing the risk of chromosomal abnormalities in the egg and supporting neural tube development during early pregnancy.

For these reasons, it is commonly taken alongside inositols, but, as you’ll know if you’ve been in the TTC game for more than five minutes – not all folic acid is created equal.

Many supplements marketed for female fertility contain folic acid, which is a synthetic form of the vitamin. However, it is biologically inactive and needs to be converted into a form called 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHFR) to be used by the body.

Quatrefolic®, the active form of folic acid included in Ovosicare® Fertility, offers superior bioavailability, meaning it is MTHFR gene-friendly and more easily absorbed by the body.

3. Vitamin D3

Vitamin D is recommended across preconception as well as in pregnancy. It has been shown to improve immune function, as well as reduce inflammatory responses in the body – something that is particularly important for successful conception in women.

This key vitamin also contributes to normal cell division and is important to pair with inositol for tip-top preconception prep.

Vitamin D3 in particular, the form used in Ovosicare® Fertility, has better bioavailability than its Vitamin D2 counterpart and also stays active in your body for longer.
